Dr Amidu Abiodun Yekini has marked a significant milestone in the field of Sports Science with the successful completion of his PhD centered on the study titled, Eccentric Exercise Guidelines for Managing Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Under the guidance of Professor Jeanne Grace, Yekini’s research has paved the way for innovative approaches in managing this challenging condition.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, Yekini expressed a profound sense of fulfilment. His study’s findings confirm the efficacy of eccentric exercise interventions in managing Rheumatoid Arthritis, impacting key parameters such as body composition, blood pressure, and functional capacity. This ground-breaking research is the first of its kind, underscoring its novelty and potential to transform clinical practice.
Driven by a desire to address gaps in existing knowledge, Yekini embarked on this research journey to develop appropriate eccentric exercise guidelines for Rheumatoid Arthritis management. Despite encountering challenges, particularly during the recruitment of participants amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Yekini remained steadfast in his pursuit, eventually overcoming obstacles as restrictions eased.
Born and raised in Nigeria, Yekini’s journey into the Medical fraternity began during his bachelor’s studies, where he developed a keen interest in clinical exercise physiology. This passion deepened during his master’s degree in Belgium, where his thesis focused on the effects of exercise in rehabilitating heart disease patients. This trajectory ultimately led him to pursue doctoral research aimed at addressing critical gaps in Rheumatoid Arthritis management.
Yekini credits his family as his greatest support and motivation. Their unwavering encouragement and belief in his abilities fuelled his determination to excel, culminating in the successful completion of his PhD.
Beyond academia, Yekini enjoys traveling, finding solace and inspiration in exploring new destinations. His diverse interests and dedication to advancing medical research underscore his commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Yekini’s pioneering research represents a significant step forward in understanding and managing Rheumatoid Arthritis, offering hope for improved outcomes and quality of life for patients worldwide.
