In his ground-breaking doctoral thesis, Dr Tolulope Adeniji unveils an innovative approach to stroke rehabilitation titled, A Brunnstrom Movement Therapy Telerehabilitation Programme with or without Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) for Improving Pain, Motor, and Cognitive Function in Older Adults Patients with Mild Cognitively-Impaired Stroke.
His research delves into the integration of telerehabilitation and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to address symptoms associated with stroke, such as pain, motor dysfunction, and mild cognitive impairment.
Under the guidance of Drs Thayananthee Nadasan, Olapado Michael Olagbegi, and Olumide Dada, Adeniji presents compelling evidence that the combined approach significantly enhances upper extremity function compared to interventions applied separately.
Expressing deep gratitude to the Almighty and his supervisory team, Adeniji acknowledges the unwavering support received throughout his PhD journey. His research journey included four publications in the Department of Higher Education and Training – accredited journals and the acceptance of an abstract for presentation at international conferences in Italy (2023) and two for the 24th Congress of the European Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Slovenia (ESPRM2024).
Adeniji highlights the immense contribution of his supervisors, particularly Nadasan, who not only provided academic rigour and guidance, but also financial assistance – demonstrating exceptional dedication and generosity. He also acknowledges the sacrifices made by Olagbegi and Nadasan, emphasising their pivotal roles in his academic success.
Prior to his PhD at UKZN, Adeniji served as a lecturer in the Department of Physiotherapy at Redeemer’s University, Nigeria, and as an older adult physiotherapist at the Federal Medical Centre Nguru, Nigeria. He commends UKZN for providing a rewarding experience and expresses gratitude to the School and College of Health Sciences for fostering an environment conducive to global academic excellence.
Adeniji’s research represents a significant step forward in stroke rehabilitation, offering hope for improved outcomes and quality of life for stroke survivors.
