In a remarkable display of academic excellence, 11 students have graduated with Bachelor of Physiotherapy degrees cum laude.
Mr Talha Badat, Ms Kashmira Chetty, Ms Kiara Chetty, Husnaa Bilal Ganchi, Ms Thabile Leanne Hlangu, Ms Shriya Maharaj, Ms Zandile Majola, Ms Dumisile Londeka Mdanda, Ms Zaharah Mohideen, Ms Darmini Shivania Pillay, and Mr Sicelo Sydwell Sibiya have all distinguished themselves through their exceptional academic performance.
Hlangu expressed her joy at this significant accomplishment, saying, ‘It has always been my dream from my first year of study to complete my degree cum laude.’ Looking towards the future, Hlangu aspires to obtain a PhD in Physiotherapy and hopes to receive the prestigious title of “Professor”.
The decision to study physiotherapy was deeply rooted in a personal experience for Hlangu. Witnessing a neighbour rehabilitate from a stroke through physiotherapy ignited her passion for the field. She fell in love with the idea of helping people regain their normal function through rehabilitation, leading her to pursue this career path.
Despite facing challenges, particularly during the transition to the clinical setting in the third-year post online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hlangu remained resilient. She sought assistance from qualified physiotherapists and practiced diligently with her peers to overcome the difficulties encountered during hands-on patient care.
Reflecting on her study experience at UKZN, Hlangu commended the approachable and kind nature of the Physiotherapy department lecturers. She believes they equipped students with the necessary knowledge to become independent professionals in the future.
Coming from a supportive family background, with both parents present in her life, along with two siblings, Hlangu values her upbringing in Mhlabatshane, near Highflats. Her hobbies include drawing and creative writing, and she holds a special fondness for tripe with steamed bread as her favourite dish.
Hlangu’s journey from Ixopo Pre-school to Ixopo Primary School, and later to Little Flower High School, has been marked by academic excellence and a passion for athletics. Currently, she is engaged in community service at St Apollinaris Hospital in Centocow, where she continues to contribute to the field of physiotherapy with dedication and commitment.
